“Golden visa” investment inflow jumps 87.5% in 2016

According to figures released by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) in 2016 foreign investors invested €874 million and received 1 414 “golden visas”. As a comparison, in 2015 money invested was €466 million.

In December 2016, 87 million came into the country, which is more than in December 2015 for 47%. In December 2016 141 residence permits were issued, 131 of them for property purchases and 10 for capital transfers. Of the 131 property purchases, four were for urban rehabilitation projects - which have a lower threshold of 250,000.

In 2016 the vast majority of investments - more than 77 million - was in the form of property purchases, the threshold for which is 500,000. Capital transfer accounted for 10.4 million.

The golden visa programme was launched in October 2012, since then total investment amount is 2.567 billion (2.316 billion is for property purchases and 251 million for capital transfers).

China is by far the country with the most citizens to have secured permits under this programme (3050), followed by Brazil with 247, Russia with 148, South Africa with 137 and Lebanon with 72.
